The Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Bologna appoints Research Visiting Fellows for a maximum of six months. Deadline: 30 SEPTEMBER 2008
The Institute of Advanced Studies of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna is pleased to announce a call for the following Early-Stage Research Fellowships:
A) Early-Stage Research Fellowships in the field of Humanities and Economics (2 to be awarded)
B) Early-Stage Research Fellowships in the field of Sciences and Technology (2 to be awarded)
Each Fellowship will be assigned to a early career researcher to develop a research activity at a Department or Research Centre of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna.
The terms and conditions of the Early-Stage Research (ESR) Fellowship are described below:
1. The candidate must hold an invitation from a permanent member of the Academic staff of the University of Bologna who will act as supervisor and will guarantee access to research facilities.
2. The ESR Fellowship will begin between 6 and 20 January 2009 and end not later than 31 July 2009 for an overall duration of not less than six months.
3. The ESR bursary amounts to € 7,800 before taxes (including fiscal charges for the University of Bologna) to cover a period of 6 months. The grant will be paid by the Administration of the Institute of Advanced Studies in deferred bimonthly instalments. The ESR Fellowship is must not be held simultaneously with any other grant or contract provided by the Italian Government or other Public Administrations in Italy.
4. The Institute of Advanced Studies will provide accommodation in mini-flat equipped with cooking facilities, bathroom and bedroom to be shared with another ESR fellow or PhD student at the Institute of Advanced Studies (Residenza di Studi Superiori, Via Mario Fantin 15 - 40131 Bologna www.residenza.unibo.it ). ESRF grantees carrying out their research projects in one of the regional sites of the University of Bologna will be granted an extra contribution against accommodation expenses of €200 / month.
5. The ESR Fellowship is awarded after a selection process based on publications and other academic qualifications/achievements.
Candidates must:
- be citizens of countries other than Italy and not resident in Italy.
- not be over 36 years of age at the date of the application deadline
- hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification fully granted by a University at the date of the application deadline.
6. Applications will be evaluated by the Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies. The advice of external referees may be sought.
Particular consideration will be given to the quality of the candidate's:
(i) publication record
(ii) academic degree and qualifications/achievements
(iii) research proposal;
7. Applications should be sent by e-mail to the Director of the Institute (direzione.isa@unibo.it) and copied to the Administrative (segreteria.isa@unibo.it) and International Secretaries (secretary.isa@unibo.it) not later than 30 September 2008.
Candidates are required to use the application form available on the Institute web site www.isa.unibo.it
In addition the application must include
(i) a curriculum vitae;
(ii) a publication list;
(iii) at least one letter of reference from a senior scientist acquainted with the candidate's curriculum vitae
(iv) one letter of invitation and reference written by the candidate's proposed research project supervisor at the University of Bologna
8. The Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies will draft a shortlist of the candidates in order of merit, which will be published on the Institute's web site within 60 days of the application deadline.
9. The ESR Fellowships will be awarded by the Council of Resident Fellows of the Institute of Advanced Studies in accordance with the order of merit.
10. The successful candidate must officially accept the Fellowship within 7 days of the date of publication of the order of merit on the Institute website. Within the Fellowship starting date he/she will have to submit to the ISA Administration official certification of the academic qualifications together with the letter of formal acceptance of the Fellowship. The statement should include a formal acceptance of the fellowship conditions as described above. False declarations will lead to exclusion from the Fellowship and Fellow will be liable to prosecution pursuant to Italian law.
11. As required by local authorities, the Institute of Advanced Studies and the University of Bologna will undertake to provide letters of invitation addressed to the Italian Consulate of the candidate's Country of residence in order to obtain a visa and, upon arrival in Bologna, a residence permit for study purposes for the duration of the fellowship, issued by the local Police Authorities.
12. ESR Fellows are expected to carry out research activities according to the research project plan presented in the application and in association with the University Department or Research Centre mentioned in the application.
13. Failure to comply with the above requirements, or commission of serious disciplinary or criminal offences, will lead to the Fellowship being revoked.
14. If the successful candidate is unable to take up the ESR Fellowship, the fellowship will be offered to the other candidates following the order of merit in the shortlist
15. The ESR Fellowship does not entitle to social security coverage. ESR Fellows are requested to subscribe to appropriate accident, medical and liability insurance, as established by University regulations. The fellowship is not an employment contract and its only purpose is to foster the Fellow's intellectual and scientific development. The tax regime applicable to the Fellowship is that defined by Italian law.
16. In the case of assignment of the Fellowship to non-EU citizens, the Fellow's supervisor and the staff of the Department of the University of Bologna, where the ESR Fellow will perform his/her activities, will have to comply with all the procedures required by the Bologna Police Authorities in order to provide him/her with a sojourn permit in Italy.
17. ESR Fellows are required to deliver a lecture about their research activities, and to provide a short paper on the research work they have undertaken, which must be signed by the supervisor. This will must be forwarded to the Director of the Institute at the end of the Fellowship period. The ESR Fellow is expected to acknowledge the support received from the Institute of Advanced Studies in research papers and other publications produced during their research at the University of Bologna.
